The main fatty acids are EicosaPentaenoic Acid (EPA), DocosaHexaenoic Acid (DHA) and α-Linolenic Acid (ALA). DocosaHexaenoic Acid (DHA) is a long chain fatty acid that forms the main part of the brain, retina and sperms. Most of the human brain, almost 40% is made out of DHA. The percentage in the retina is even greater, about 60%.

The main constituents of the brain, the neurons that transmit electrical impulses which control the cognitive and the automatic action of the human body are mostly made out of DHA. So if there is deficiency of DHA, the overall cognitive ability of a person will be lowered. This might also lead to depression.

Amino acids Choline, Glycine, and Taurine that are needed for detoxification of the body are regulated by DHA. This helps in improving overall mental alertness of the child and helps the development of brain. DHA acts to reduce the levels of triglycerides, this in turn lowers the overall cholesterol levels and thus reduces formation of plaque inside the arteries.

Lesser the plaque, lower are the chances of developing a blockage in the artery and thus lower the chance of heart attack.

DHA is abundant in fish oil and hence eating fish is a good habit. DHA is rarely found in vegetables, which puts vegetarians at a disadvantage.

However, scientists have discovered that certain species of algae are also rich in DHA; hence vegetarians can also benefit by consuming algae based Omega 3 supplements containing DHA.

The best part of processed DHA whether fish based or algae based is that none of them smell fishy or taste fishy.  The taste is masked by fruity flavors or by consuming capsules.
